⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | Really liked it! Highly recommend.
This one’s for the girlies who love a vengeful FMC locked in a cell with a golden-haired shadow daddy who can’t decide if he wants to destroy her, worship her, or both. If morally messy men and “do I hate you or do I crave you?” tension is your oxygen — The Umbra King by Jamie Applegate Hunter is for you.
Summary:
After the brutal murder of her twin sister, Aurora “Rory” Raven spends years forging herself into a ruthless vigilante killer.
She never gave up her search for the man who killed her sister, but when she is convicted of thirteen murders and sentenced to five-hundred years in Vincula, the prison realm, she knows her sister’s death will never be avenged.
After arriving in Vincula, Aurora discovers her opportunity for retribution is closer than she thought.
Caius is the notorious Umbra King, ruler of Vincula, King of the Monsters, and the thing nightmares are made of. After being locked in his own realm for a crime he didn’t commit, his only focus has been revenge.
But when Aurora drops into his throne room, representing everything he despises, they begin a game of cat and mouse, and before long, their hatred turns into something else.
Circumstances draw them together, but revenge might tear them apart.
📖 What’s Inside:
- 🩸 Blood & gore
- Multi-POV goodness
- Dream walking
- 💙 He falls first (and HARD)
- 🌈 Inclusive world
- Explicit language
- On-page intimacy 🔴
- “Who did this to you?” 😏
✨ Vibes:
A dash of The Book of Azrael, a sprinkle of Rain of Shadows and Endings, and a HEAP of feminine rage — but honestly? This book stands on its own feral little throne.
💭 My Thoughts:
What a wild, surprising ride.
I went in side-eyeing that cover like “maybe later…” and came out shrieking because HELLO, PLOT TWISTS?!
From page one, you’re piecing clues together like a conspiracy theorist with a corkboard. Everyone seems suspicious. Everyone seems guilty. And when the truth finally detonates?
Jaw. On. Floor.
Throw in a few twists that blindsided me in the best way, spicy tension that should honestly be illegal, and an ending that had me clutching my face like a Victorian widow — yeah. I’m in. I’m locked in.
And THANK THE READING GODS it’s a completed duology because I cannot emotionally handle any more unfinished series right now.
Should you add The Umbra King to your TBR?
If you want shadowy chaos, explosive twists, and a morally gray MMC who falls first and falls hard — absolutely. Dive in and don’t look back.
🔒Final Judgment Before the Cell Door Clangs Shut
Look, if being imprisoned means sharing a dungeon with a golden-haired hottie who can ruin your life and your emotional stability? Yeah… I’m not saying I’d stay willingly, but I’m also not sprinting for the exit.
No shame in my dungeon-dwelling game. Now spill it — would you let the shadow king keep the key?
