Book Review: Eyes of Devious Burgundy by Lacey Lehotzky

⭐️⭐️⭐️ | It’s Okay. Still Recommend.

Read Eyes of Devious Burgundy if you like Mulan vibes, angels vs. demons, war strategy that actually makes sense, morally questionable MMCs, and dark fantasy that doesn’t tiptoe around the heavy stuff.

Book Boyfriend Meter: 🤍

No chemistry. No thank you.

He will not be entering the leaderboard.
Bald. Head tattoos. Aggressive personality.
Respectfully… pass.

💭 My Thoughts:

First things first: the names? I struggled. This was very much a sksjdhhsg the name and move on situation.

What kept me turning pages was the tension around the FMC’s secret. I was in a constant chokehold wondering when she’d get caught and how she’d possibly pull off the scheme long-term. That suspense? Top tier.

When the second POV arrived, I was less invested, but still curious. I had theories about the MMC and his role in the bigger picture… and yes, I was right. But the way the reveal unfolded still had me second-guessing myself. When it finally landed? Equal parts devastated and giddy. IYKYK.

One thing this book absolutely nails: war realism.
The strategy. The soldier movements. The daily military life. It felt intentional and believable. The leaders actually think like leaders. The war isn’t just background noise, it’s structured and strategic. Loved that.

Now… the romance.

I’m not opposed to enemies-to-lovers with teeth. But this leaned hard into aggression without earning the emotional turnaround. The transition from hate to love felt rushed, and in my opinion, the MMC never truly redeemed himself. For someone positioned as a brilliant military leader, the final plan felt underwhelming. I expected more.

Also? This book is THICC. 700+ pages. It probably didn’t need to be. Some of the more intense intimacy scenes could’ve been trimmed in favor of deeper character growth.

Did I love the first half? Yes.
Did the second half lose me a bit? Also yes.

This is very much a you’ll love it or you’ll hate it kind of book. I’m not convinced there’s a middle ground.

📚Read Alikes:

Mulan. Definitely. With a whisper of Fifty Shades of Grey. (Trust me. You’ll see.)

Should You Add Eyes of Devious Burgundy To Your TBR?

Maybe.

If you like dark fantasy, morally rough MMCs, war strategy, and secret identity tension—give it a shot.

But seriously. CHECK. YOUR. TRIGGERS.
This one doesn’t soften the edges.

You’ve been warned.
