Looking for a dark fantasy retelling of Peter Pan? Losing Wendy by TA Lawrence delivers fated mates, fae, and a twisted murder mystery set in a dangerously dark Neverland.
Summary:
Sometimes the shadows whisper.
Sometimes I whisper back.
When Wendy’s parents made a bargain with a Fate to save her from a deathly illness as a child, they thought the terms were simple: Marry her off before her twentieth birthday or else deliver her over to the Shadow Keeper.
But when a Mating Mark appears on Wendy’s skin, finding a husband becomes a tad more complicated. After all, no one wants a wife mated to another man.
As Wendy’s twentieth birthday approaches and she’s yet to find a man who will take her, she and her parents throw a masquerade ball in a last ditch effort to free her from her curse.
But nothing is as it seems, and when a mysterious dark-haired captain with a Mating Mark and a vendetta against Wendy’s family crashes the masquerade, Wendy quickly discovers that the fae Shadow Keeper she’s been scheming to escape might just be her only hope.

💭 My Thoughts:
This book is NOT your typical fairytale re-telling. It’s dark from start to finish—dark meaning death, drug abuse, murder, psychosis, and more. It’s honestly hard to say if I even “liked” it in the traditional sense, because it leaves you feeling unsettled rather than satisfied. But I couldn’t put it down. It’s like watching a disturbing carnival act. You know it’s twisted, maybe even horrifying, but you’re captivated. The writing is strong, though I can’t help wondering about the mental stamina it must take to craft something this dark… and maybe my own for reading it 😬. My rating may be generous, but the fact that I kept reading proves I was hooked in a twisted way.
Should you add Losing Wendy to your TBR?
If you enjoy dark retellings, morally gray characters, and a story that keeps you glued to the page, definitely. Just know it’s not a light or comforting read.
