⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | Really liked it! Highly recommend.

Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry is a lush, monster-filled slow burn that will make you scream, swoon, and then immediately want the next book.

Summary:

The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I’ve spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father’s. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father’s throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I’m crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn’t choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I’m not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there’s power in being underestimated?

And what if—for the first time—I reached for it?

✨ Vibes:

Think Jurassic World meets The Remnant Chronicles… kinda.

💭 My Thoughts:

This book is part of an unfinished series, which is bittersweet because the cliffhanger is a killer (consider yourself warned 😅). But honestly, it’s worth immersing yourself in this story.

The worldbuilding is phenomenal—lush, detailed, and gripping from the start. I loved the concept: fresh, no dragons or fae in sight, just a unique fantasy setting with high stakes. The romance is slow burn, yes, excruciatingly slow burn, but it pays off.

Why not 5 stars? The wordiness dragged it down a bit. The author rarely uses scene breaks, which makes some sections feel like rambling transitions. It could easily be trimmed by 100 pages. Plus, the set-up is long: it’s not until around 58% that you start getting real answers. But once the final 40% hits—wow. The twists, reveals, and action will have you page-turning like crazy right to the shocking, earth-shattering cliffhanger.

Should you add Shield of Sparrows to your TBR?

If you enjoy lush fantasy worlds, monsters, slow-burn romance, and cliffhangers that make you scream, absolutely yes. Just brace yourself for the wait if you plan to read the next book!
