If you’ve been in the Dramione fandom for more than five minutes, you’ve probably heard of the Marriage Law trope.
Because apparently when the wizarding world has a crisis, the Ministry’s solution is always the same:
Force people to get married.
Naturally, this leads to chaos, resentment, accidental feelings, and some of the most addictive Dramione fanfiction ever written.
Marriage Law fics usually revolve around a post-war Ministry decree that magically binds witches and wizards into assigned marriages in order to restore magical population numbers.
And of course… Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger end up paired together.
What follows is typically some combination of:
- enemies forced to live together
- slow-burn tension
- political pressure from the Ministry
- reluctant cooperation that turns into something much more complicated
If you love forced proximity and enemies-to-lovers dynamics dialed up to eleven, the Marriage Law trope delivers every single time.
Here are some God-tier Marriage Law Dramione fics you absolutely need on your reading list.
Note: All of these Dramione fics are available on Archive of Our Own (AO3). As always, check the tags, ratings, and author notes before reading.

1. In These Silent Days by HeyJude19
Summary:
Hermione is familiar with fighting: for respect, for attention, for justice. She’s even made a career of it; working on behalf of creatures and beings. But her battle against the Ministry’s marriage law is one she loses. Badly. And now, she has to contend with not only public derision and patriarchal politics, but her growing feelings for her government-mandated spouse.
2. Ten Out of Ten by morriganmercy
Summary:
In which Hermione is determined to find a loophole to free her from a forced marriage with Draco Malfoy. But with only two weeks until they are legally required to consummate, it would be irresponsible not to prepare for every contingency.
3. Bloody, Slutty and Pathetic by WhatMurdah
Summary:
When war heroine Hermione Granger and Azkaban-tattooed war criminal Draco Malfoy are forced to wed as part of Shacklebolt’s controversial Reconciliation Act, they openly fight the match and each other—their public brawls breathlessly reported by the press.
Secretly, a deeply traumatized Draco delights in Hermione’s attention and pines for a real marriage with her—even as her forced proximity to the Black family magic irritates the cursed scar Bellatrix left on her arm, reminding her why she can never truly trust or forgive him. Then Hermione discovers that Draco’s blood will soothe the scar . . . and Draco is willing to trade his blood for her body.
4. A Gallows Marriage by MilaBelle
Summary:
After doing more than her fair share in saving the Wizarding World and bearing the scars of what it cost, Hermione Granger thinks she has earned herself a little respite. But when a charismatic albeit chaotic Theodore Nott convinces her to use an old law to save a dear friend who is about to meet the Dementor’s Kiss, she simply cannot stand by and watch. Follow Hermione as she navigates a world that still believes in blood status, a marriage to save the life of an old enemy and the hurt that comes with surviving.
5. An Ever Fixed Mark by ninepiecesofcrait
Summary:
It was a comedy of errors how Hermione Granger ended up engaged to Draco Malfoy, really. A series of unfortunate events.
Malfoy looked at his bloodied hand and the ring on the cobblestone floor, and sighed. “Well, Granger.” Grey eyes finally raised to look at her. “Now look what you’ve done.”
[while working to break a curse in malfoy’s cellar, hermione accidentally touches an enchanted betrothal heirloom from the noble house of black. things rapidly fall apart from there.]
6. The Binding by Curly_Kay
Summary:
After an infant binding ritual magically joins Hermione and Draco to counteract the Black family blood curse, they must navigate the secret binding through their years together at Hogwarts.
7. This Is How You Destroy Me by emeraldsinthedark
Summary:
Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Ron Weasley, and Pansy Parkinson are forcibly paired under a reenacted marriage law, designed to combat the wizarding world’s plummeting population. Matches must consummate their unions within a year or face reassignment.
Furious at the injustice, Hermione agrees to marry Draco Malfoy, as a calculated act of rebellion, determined to expose the law’s cruelty from within. Draco, under his mother’s pressure, sees the marriage as a means to an end, a way to restore the Malfoy name and manipulate public favour by aligning with the war’s golden girl.
Ron and Pansy, unexpectedly matched and left behind, are forced into uneasy coexistence, watching the people they care for most choose strategy over sentiment.
Intentions don’t stay hidden forever. With every bitter word, every stone thrown, and every unspoken truth, each couple finds themselves inching closer to the edge, until love, loyalty, and defiance bleed into something more dangerous.
This is not how you fall in love. This is how you destroy me.
8. Not With A Bang… by megalle
Summary:
Draco Malfoy has just 9 months left on a 7 year house arrest sentence when the Ministry announces a new Marriage and Repopulation Act. Draco assumes it will not affect him as he is still under house arrest. He assumes wrongly.
No matter, the Ministry, in their infinite wisdom, has paired him with one Hermione Granger. The witch has never met an injustice she hasn’t fought against and so Draco assumes she’ll fight this one to the death before tying herself to him. Again, he assumes wrongly.
So now he has a wife who more resembles a ghost haunting his manor than the girl he once knew, a meddling elf, a rapidly approaching release date and no idea what life outside the Manor walls looks like or for the first time in his life, someone trying to tell him what to do with it.
9. Don’t Hex the Messenger by ArtGirl
Summary:
When Ron dies during the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry blames Hermione for his death. Filled with grief and desperate for peace Hermione flees to the Muggle World to live in exile. Four years later, the last person she ever wanted to see again from the Wizarding World walks into her bookshop: Draco Malfoy. Due to the dwindling birth rates in the Magical World the Ministry has implemented a Marriage Law and to their absolute horror they’ve been matched. Though the motives for their match from the powers that be seems more like it was meant to punish the pair than to contribute to the Wizarding World. Together, they find healing and comfort from their painful past as they try to move forward and realize that sometimes the best revenge is a happy life.
10. Unequivocal by irene_doe
Summary:
Hermione thought her biggest issues this year would be being stuck in a dead-end job and not quite getting along with her new officemate, Draco Malfoy. However, the Ministry is about turn her tidy and contained life upside down with the announcement of the new Marriage and Family Law, and there’s more trouble brewing as outbursts of uncontrolled magic begin to wreck havoc in the office.
Draco has been reassigned to Corporate Services after an Auror mission went spectacularly sideways; at least, that’s what he’s telling everyone. The truth is hardly as straightforward and Granger has him increasingly on edge, so naturally, he was only too pleased to learn of the new Law that was going to out him as a Creature to the woman he loves.
11. An Unsuitable Mate by FictionAficionado
Summary:
Draco discovers he’s part Veela and Hermione is his mate. Tired of having his choices taken away from him, he ignores the fates and marries Astoria instead. Draco is happy with the life he’s made for himself till a marriage law threatens to destroy it all by once more forcing the most annoying witch he’s ever known back into his life.
12. Marriage, Murder and Other Misfortunes by spookyandcooky (WIP)
Summary:
Five years after the Battle of Hogwarts, the wizarding world is what you might call “a godsdamned mess.” The population is dwindling, the economy is suffering, and Hermione Granger has decided to pursue an arranged marriage—but only so she can be nominated to the antiquated Wizengamot, of course. After all, the Wizengamot is ignoring the world’s problems, and Hermione is determined to fix them. Granted, she never expected to be matched with Draco sodding Malfoy—the newest DMLE consultant who wears his Azkaban tattoos as proudly as his childhood sneer. But admittedly, between the turbulence of her farcical relationship, corrupt politicians, and a serial killer on the loose, nothing in Hermione’s life is going according to plan. Maybe hate sex with her husband will help?
🖤A Fic For The End Of The World
I have one final fanfic rec I want to humbly submit for your consideration. While it’s not a marriage law fic, it is my fanfic. Which is to say that Bridging the Gap is my small contribution to the amazing Dramione fandom.
Summary:
When Hermione wakes up with eight of her most formative years missing from her memory, she discovers she’s somehow married to Draco Malfoy and best friends with the snakes of Slytherin House. And no, she doesn’t remember losing her virginity or, more importantly, most of her time at Hogwarts. Now, she must learn about her past through the accounts of others while she struggles to make a life for herself in the present.
