Underrated Fantasy Romances You Haven’t Read Yet

✨Heads up! Some links in this post are Amazon affiliate links. That means if you click and buy, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for helping me keep this blog running and my TBR endless! 📚

Are you so over seeing the same fantasy romance recs on every list? Yeah, me too. Here’s a curated list of hidden gems in the fantasy-romance world: stories you probably haven’t heard of, but absolutely deserve a spot on your TBR. These fics/novels pack heart, magic, and—most importantly—romance that hits. Let’s dive in.

🔍 Why “underrated” matters

Because the big titles get all the hype. They get the social-media buzz. They sit on the best-seller lists. But that means a lot of really good reads get left behind. And then you don’t get to hear about them. #tragic This is my spotlight on the lesser-known books that deserve more attention.

Underrated Fantasy Romance Books

Losing Wendy by T.A. Lawrence

I’ve talked about this series on Instagram a lot. It’s dark, it’s twisted, it’s emotional, it’s got fated mates, fae and magic. It’s everything you want in a fantasy romance an more people should be reading this series. Read my review of book one.

Wild Bond by Laurie Ford

I’m just gonna say it, Wild Bond is better than Fourth Wing. I read Ford’s book before the hyped-up Fourth Wing came out and genuinely thought Yarros was inspired by Wild Bond. The dragons are unique, the character’s are well-developed, and the spice was tasteful and on point. If you loved Fourth Wing, you’ll love Wild Bond even more.

The Curse of Ophelia by Nicole Platania

This series isn’t everywhere yet (even though readers who find it fall hard). It blends Greek mythology, epic fantasy, multiple romance arcs, and political intrigue—something you don’t always see together. It’s a hidden gem for anyone who wants their romantasy full‑tilt.

Esperance by Heather Frost

Despite solid reader love, it hasn’t yet hit the “everyone knows this one” level. The premise is fresh, the stakes are wild, and the romance is anything but background noise. This series deserves more hype, especially since the second book’s release date was recently announced. (Dec 18, 2025)

The Umbra King by Jamie Applegate Hunter

A prison realm, a revegenge plot, and edge‑of‑your‑seat tension. If you crave a fantasy romance unlike any other, this one deserves more recognition. Even better? It’s a completed duology.

Why These Books Are Worth Your Time (and Shelf)

  • Because underrated fantasy romance books are often indie-written. Reading them lifts up stories that otherwise might get drowned out by big marketing budgets. Support what you love.
  • Because these books take risks. Whether that’s with morally ambiguous protagonists, relationships that aren’t neatly tied up, or magic systems that come with consequences.
  • Because voice matters. Their style feels personal and distinct, not cookie-cutter fantasy.

📣Shout It From the Rooftops

Pick one, read it, and then tell everyone about it. Because great fantasy romance deserves more love than just the mainstream picks. Which one are you starting with? Or do you already have an underrated fantasy romance you think everyone should read? Drop it in the comments — I need more gems. 👀
