✨ Vibes:

Twilight meets The Hunger Games.

Basically: vampires, shifters, deadly trials, and a romance that has somehow gone spectacularly wrong.

But honestly? If you’re a Dramione reader, pay attention.

There is something about the way these two interact that gave me MAJOR Dramione vibes. That particular brand of tension and animosity where you can feel the chemistry underneath all the hostility?

Yep. That. I also have a list of fantasy books that feel like Dramione if you’re interested.

💭 My Thoughts:

Apparently, I’m on an Ella Fields kick now.

After finishing Tame the Dark, I immediately cracked this one open, and OF COURSE I was instantly hooked. I don’t know how she does it, but Fields has a way of pulling me into a story from the very beginning.

And the premise immediately had me curious.

Lovers to enemies?

Excuse me?

Then I discovered it was a dual timeline and I was even more interested.

Because you have the present timeline, where these two absolutely despise each other…

And then you have the past timeline, where they fell in love.

So naturally, the entire time I’m reading, I’m sitting there like:

Girl. WHAT HAPPENED?!

And that question alone kept me turning pages.

THE ROMANCE:

The yearning.

THE YEARNING.

The tension between these two was perfection. There was such a fantastic contrast between watching them fall in love in the past and watching them hate each other in the present.

And somehow, despite knowing they eventually become enemies, I was still completely invested in their relationship.

I also couldn’t stop getting Dramione vibes from them. There’s just a certain je ne sais quoi to their interactions that I think Dramione readers will immediately understand.

So babes.

If that’s you, you’re probably going to love this.

Fields is also ridiculously good at writing a particular kind of MMC: blushing, yearning, tortured, ruthless, morally grey, and somehow still incredibly sweet when it comes to the woman he loves.

It’s an annoyingly effective combination.

AND SOMEHOW… THE TROPES I HATE?

Here’s the weirdest part.

Ella Fields somehow took two of my least favorite tropes and made them not terrible.

The first is cheating.

Except by the time I understood the relationship well enough to actually get upset about the cheating, I discovered there wasn’t really cheating happening in the way I thought there was.

So… okay.

I’ll allow it.

Then there’s miscommunication.

Normally, this is where I’m screaming:

JUST. TALK. TO. EACH. OTHER.

But somehow, by the time I realized what was actually happening with the communication between these characters, things were already moving toward reconciliation.

So I didn’t have to spend the entire book suffering through people refusing to have one conversation.

Bless.

Instead, I actually felt for these characters. Their relationship hurt in the best way, and all that yearning made the eventual romance incredibly satisfying.

CRITICISMS:

Now, I have noticed a pattern with Ella Fields.

The worldbuilding and magic systems are definitely more of a backdrop than a centerpiece.

That was true in Tame the Dark, and it’s true here too.

The fantasy elements are there, but I wouldn’t pick up one of her books expecting pages and pages of intricate magical systems and sprawling lore.

That’s just not really what she’s doing.

And I don’t think it needs to be.

The characters and relationships are clearly the main event, and that’s where she shines.

Also…

How is this a standalone?

Seriously.

I went from one standalone and immediately jumped into this one, and now I’m sitting here wondering how she manages to fit this much story into one book.

I did notice some recurring patterns in her character types and storytelling, but the actual stories are different enough that I never felt like I was reading the same book twice.

Which is impressive, considering I apparently decided to speed-run her backlist.

So now I have a problem…

Do I continue down the Ella Fields rabbit hole?

Because these books have been wildly unputdownable.

And I am starting to think she’s become an auto-buy author for me.

If you like the combination of dangerous fantasy + tortured romance + enemies + yearning, you’ll probably want to add this one to your list. Here’s a few others with similar vibes:

  • A Bargain So Bloody — vampires + enemies to lovers + he falls first and HARD
  • To Bleed a Crystal Bloom — dark fantasy + tortured romance + morally grey MMC
  • Eyes of Devious Burgundy — demons + enemies to lovers + magical bonds

Absolutely yes.

Especially if you’re looking for a relationship dynamic that feels genuinely different from the usual fantasy romance formula.

The lovers-to-enemies setup, the dual timeline, the yearning, the tension…
