Book Review: Tame the Dark by Ella Fields

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | Really liked it! Highly recommend.

Read Tame the Dark if you like warring kingdoms, fae and wolf shifters, magical bonds, and fantasy romance where the spice is doing most of the heavy lifting.

Book Boyfriend Meter: 💛

Hot. But not for me.

Listen. I know I have a type. And apparently long silver hair is not it.

He’s morally grey. He’s hot. And he’s mysterious.

But the long silver hair? Braided? No.

I tried. I really did.

And picturing him as a Russian man with a thick accent instead, helped… a little.

But he will not be making my Book Boyfriend Leaderboard.

Apparently I’m shallow.

I can live with that. 😂

If you can relate, this free morally grey book boyfriend starter pack was made for you.

✨ Vibes:

Rose in Chains — war-torn kingdoms + young people forced to interact in a supposedly safe environment

The Wolf King — wolf shifters + fantasy romance

Basically: Rose in Chains meets The Wolf King… with significantly more spice and considerably less worldbuilding.

💭 My Thoughts:

I picked this up after spending half a book on something that ultimately disappointed me.

So naturally… I was terrified.

Ella Fields is a hit-or-miss author for me, and after wasting all that reading time, I really didn’t want another disappointment.

Thankfully? This one hooked me immediately.

I loved the FMC’s voice from the start.

Her perspective felt fluid, believable, and incredibly easy to sink into.

And the whole setup gave me major Rose in Chains vibes.

Warring kingdoms. Children from opposing sides. Forced to interact in a place that’s supposedly safe.

I ate it up.

THE ROMANCE:

I didn’t necessarily connect with the MMC.

And yes… I’m blaming the long hair.

But despite my very serious silver-hair crisis, the dynamic between these two worked.

Their chemistry was good. The tension was good. And the romance kept me reading.

The MMC just wasn’t making my personal Book Boyfriend Leaderboard.

What can I say? I like what I like.

THE SPICE:

Let’s be honest.

If you’re picking this book up, you’re probably here for the romance.

Because while there are fae, wolf shifters, magic, and warring kingdoms… They’re mostly background elements. The fantasy serves the romance. And the romance serves the spice. Which is perfectly fine if that’s what you’re looking for.

Just don’t pick this up expecting an intricately developed magic system or sprawling epic fantasy.

I barely understood the FMC’s magic. She barely used it. The MMC shifts, but not often. Mostly, we’re getting his enhanced wolf senses.

So if you’re here for worldbuilding? Lower your expectations.

If you’re here for spice? Come on in.

CRITICISMS:

This one had a very specific rhythm.

Compelling beginning. Slower second quarter. (ie. smut) Dark third act. Then an action-packed final quarter.

It worked for me overall, although the middle definitely slowed down.

But the important thing?

I never got that feeling I had with the previous book where I was sitting there wondering if I’d wasted my time.

I kept reading. And that’s a win.

THE VERDICT:

This isn’t a five-star, life-changing fantasy romance.

And it doesn’t need to be. It’s fun. It is spicy. It’s fast enough to keep you turning pages.

And it got me out of my reading slump after weeks of starting books and abandoning them.

That’s worth something.
