Book Boyfriend Meter: ❤️🔥
Endgame. No notes.
Perfectly devoted. Completely obsessed with her. Would choose her every single time.
Which is exactly why he might not make my leaderboard.
I know. I’m impossible. But I like my men a little messy. A little morally grey. And if you feel the same way, this free morally grey book boyfriend starter pack was made for you.
✨ Vibes:
Rain of Shadows and Endings — power-sharing bond + intense romantic connection
The Bridge Kingdom — hidden identities, political tension, and dangerous alliances
Basically: unique magic + war + secret identities + dual yearning that will have you ignoring your responsibilities.
💭 My Thoughts:
I picked this book up for one reason:
The yearning.
I’d heard people talking about the dual yearning and babes…they were NOT exaggerating.
You get a taste of it almost immediately, and it only gets worse. In the best possible way.
The relationship sold me from chapter one.
The worldbuilding? That took a little more work.
Because WOW.
Chapter one throws you directly into the war, the political players, the magic system, the bonds…
Everything. I had to pay close attention. But once I got my bearings?
I was gone.
This book had me wanting to ignore every responsibility I had and stay up way too late reading.
I haven’t felt that way about a book in a while.
THE ROMANCE:
The yearning is fantastic.
The romance is ridiculously sweet.
And the MMC?
THIS MAN.
He is devoted. Like, completely and unwaveringly devoted to the FMC. Book husband material. My only issue is that he’s almost too perfect. His entire personality in this book is basically:
“I love her. I will protect her and stand by her. I’ll do anything for her.”
Beautiful. Truly.
But I also wanted a little more complexity.
A little mess. A flaw. Something.
Because nobody is THAT perfect.
And apparently I need my fictional men to have problems I can personally solve.
I’m self-aware enough to know this is a me problem.
THE MAGIC:
The magic system is genuinely one of the things that made this book stand out.
The power-sharing bond adds another layer to the relationship, and I loved watching the implications of it unfold.
There was some repetition throughout the book, which kept it from being a perfect five-star read for me.
And I will say… I was expecting a slower burn.
The relationship really kicks off around the halfway point, and I would’ve happily taken another 200 pages of yearning.
Because yes.
I am greedy.
But also, apparently this is a standalone.
I did not know that.
At all. So the relationship kicking off mid-way through actually makes sense. I just wasn’t aware of that fact.
So when I reached the epilogue and thought, “Okay… what’s next?”
There was no next. 😂
The ending is actually satisfying. Everything feels wrapped up.
But because I was expecting a series, I was sitting there thinking: “Wait. That’s it?”
Which is entirely my fault.
So consider this your PSA: This is a standalone.
And knowing that going in will probably make the ending feel much more satisfying than it did for me.
THE VERDICT:
Despite a few small criticisms, I genuinely loved this book.
The yearning alone is worth the TBR spot. The magic system is unique. The romance is swoony. And the MMC is dangerously close to being the perfect fictional husband.
I just wish he had a little more chaos.
Because apparently I cannot simply appreciate a healthy, devoted man.
I have to want to fix him. 🤷♀️
