Would consider. Would absolutely regret something. (The jury is still very much out on other characters though 👀)
💭 My Thoughts:
Seven percent in and the stakes were already STAKING, the intrigue is intriguing, and I was already asking questions. I love when a book doesn’t waste time and immediately makes me curious about the plot and We Who Will Die absolutely delivers there.
The flashbacks and childhood friendship? Sweet. Emotional. Surprisingly effective. They’re short enough that they don’t interrupt the momentum (a miracle), and I actually found myself looking forward to them because I desperately wanted the full context of what happened between the MCs.
That said… the reveal of the MMC didn’t land as hard as it could’ve.
The FMC is shocked by his appearance, but as readers, we aren’t because the flashbacks make it pretty obvious who he is. It felt like the identity was concealed more to give the author time to share the backstory than to truly shock the reader. Luckily, it didn’t need to be a big twist for the story to work.
The romance itself was predictable for me. I’ve read enough fantasy romance that I could see the trajectory coming from a mile away, and I’m fairly confident I know where it’s headed in book two. That predictability is what ultimately dropped this from a 5-star to a 4-star read.
BUT. The story as a whole? Action-packed, tense, and genuinely intriguing. There was at least one plot twist that surprised me, and the trials kept the stakes high throughout. And can we talk about the ending for a second? Because I really appreciated that it didn’t end on a cruel, rage-inducing cliffhanger. Waiting for the next book is hard enough. Giving us an ending that promises more without emotional torture? Respect.
I’m absolutely continuing the series.
