There are approximately seventeen thousand ways for two fantasy romance characters to fall in love.
Enemies to lovers. Friends to lovers. Fated mates. Forbidden romance.
And then there’s the:
“Congratulations. You’re married” romantic chaos.
No dating.
No talking about your feelings.
And definitely no getting to know each other over a nice dinner.
Just…
SURPRISE HUSBAND!
There’s something ridiculously entertaining about throwing two people into a marriage they absolutely did not ask for and then watching them slowly realize that maybe their new spouse isn’t quite as terrible as they originally thought.
Maybe they’re actually hot. Maybe they’re competent. Or they’re protective.
Maybe they keep saving each other’s lives.
And then suddenly…
they’re falling in love.
So if you’re looking for the best fantasy romance books with marriage of convenience, arranged marriages, political alliances, or the general “well, I guess we’re married now” brand of romantic suffering, I’ve got you.
And yes, I’ve actually read and recommend every single book in this list.
Because apparently I’ve made a career out of watching fictional people get married under questionable circumstances.
Let’s get into it.
What You’ll Find in this List
- Political marriages
- Arranged marriages
- Marriage between enemies
- Forced alliances
- “We need to get married for reasons”
- “Wait… I actually like my husband”
Basically, if the characters start out thinking this marriage is a terrible idea and end up questioning why they ever thought they could live without each other?
I’m listening.
And if you love when two people are forced into close quarters, you should also check out my Fantasy Books With Only One Bed list.
What Should You Read First?
Here’s the quick list because decision fatigue is real:
- The Bridge Kingdom → strangers getting married but she’s been sent to spy on him and take him down
- The Poison Daughter → a dark fantasy with top tier emotional damage
- Conform → a dystopian fantasy with arranged marriage but also… there’s a love triangle 👀

👑 Political Marriages & Dangerous Alliances
Sometimes the marriage isn’t about love. It’s about kingdoms. Power. War. Treaties.
And unfortunately for everyone involved, feelings have a habit of showing up where they’re not invited.
The Bridge Kingdom — Danielle L. Jensen
Lara is sent to marry the king of a neighboring kingdom, but she’s secretly been trained to infiltrate and destroy it. This arranged marriage delivers political intrigue, espionage, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a badass FMC.
This was a four-star read for me and a satisfying example of a political marriage creating romantic tension without rushing the relationship.
Best for readers who want: arranged marriage + enemies to lovers + political intrigue + espionage + badass FMC

A Fate Inked in Blood — Danielle L. Jensen
This Norse-inspired romantasy combines arranged marriage, prophecy, forbidden magic, and a dangerous warrior who becomes an unexpected romantic complication. Naturally, the marriage only makes an already tense situation more complicated.
Best for readers who want: arranged marriage + Norse-inspired fantasy + forbidden magic + badass MMC

🧚 Fae, Magic & Questionable Husbands
Why settle for a normal husband when you could marry someone immortal, magically powerful, politically dangerous, or all three?
Nectar of the Wicked — Ella Fields
If you like your arranged marriages with a heavy dose of dark fae chaos, this one belongs on your TBR. Ella Fields delivers a dangerous, messy, and addictive romantasy where the marriage feels like a terrible idea from the start.
Best for readers who want: dark fae + marriage of convenience + spicy romantasy + morally grey characters

Amid Clouds and Bones — Ella Fields
This dark, fae-heavy romantasy combines arranged marriage, court politics, and plenty of romantic tension. The characters may be married, but they definitely haven’t mastered the art of having a normal conversation.

White Horse Black Nights — Evie Marceau
White Horse Black Nights offers an arranged marriage with a darker fantasy edge, dangerous circumstances, and plenty of complications. Because in fantasy romance, marriage is never just marriage—there’s usually a war, curse, or questionable man involved.
Best for readers who want: arranged marriage + bodyguard romance + dark fairytale vibes
🩸Dark Romance & Very Bad Ideas
Now we’re entering the “this marriage is objectively a terrible idea, but I’m going to keep reading anyway” portion of the list.
The Poison Daughter — Sheila Masterson
This five-star read combines arranged marriage, secrets, plot twists, and a protective MMC with serious “who did this to you?” energy. The marriage is only one part of the larger mystery, but it creates exactly the kind of romantic tension I want from this trope.

King of Battle and Blood — Scarlett St. Clair
A princess, a vampire king, and a political marriage—what more could you want? This spicy romantasy adds vampires, royalty, enemies-to-lovers tension, and an immortal husband who is powerful, dangerous, and probably a terrible influence.

⚔️ When Your Husband Is Also Your Enemy
Sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t want to marry him. It’s that you would very much like to kill him.
Romantic.
Serpent & Dove — Shelby Mahurin
A witch and a witch hunter are forced into marriage, creating plenty of enemies-to-lovers tension, banter, and reluctant proximity. It’s a fun example of two people who absolutely shouldn’t fall for each other slowly learning how to coexist.
Best for readers who want: enemies to lovers + forced marriage + banter + YA fantasy
