I love a badass FMC.

Give me a woman who can throw a punch, wield a sword, manipulate magic, survive a deadly trial, assassinate someone without blinking, or simply look a powerful man dead in the eye and say, β€œTry me.”

I’m listening.

Because while I have absolutely nothing against a soft heroine who needs rescuing once in a while, sometimes you want an FMC who is the reason everyone else needs rescuing.

These are the women who walk into dangerous situations and make them worse.

For everyone else.

Not for them.

So if you’re looking for fantasy romance books with badass FMCs, morally questionable women, assassins, warriors, rebels, magical powerhouses, and heroines who have absolutely no intention of playing nice…

Welcome.

And if you prefer your men to be just as lethal if not more so, I’ve got you. Check out my best morally grey fantasy romance books list and my fantasy romance books with shadow daddies lists for even more dangerous characters.

What You’ll Find in This List

  • Badass assassins and warriors
  • Ruthless FMCs with questionable morals
  • Deadly trials and high-stakes fantasy
  • Powerful magic and magical bonds
  • Women who have been through hell and came back meaner
  • Enemies-to-lovers and dangerous romance
  • Fae, vampires, dragons, gods, and other assorted problems

The Bridge Kingdom β€” Danielle L. Jensen

Sent into a political marriage with the king of a rival kingdom, Lara has one job: infiltrate his court, learn his weaknesses, and destroy his kingdom from the inside.

Naturally, things get complicated when she starts developing feelings for the man she’s supposed to betray.

Best for readers who want: badass assassins, arranged marriage, enemies-to-lovers tension, political intrigue, deadly trials, and an FMC who was literally trained to kill.

If the political scheming is what you’re here for, check out my fantasy romance books with political intrigue and high stakes

Soul Sworn β€” Kate Dylan

Assassins. Witches. Soulmates who are supposed to be enemies.

Yeah. This one understood the assignment.

Soul Sworn hooked me with its soulmate-but-enemies premise and the tension between its two POV characters. When these two finally meet, the payoff is chef’s kiss.

Best for readers who want: female assassins, witches, fated mates, enemies-to-lovers, dual POV, magical bonds, and only-one-bed chaos.

And if magical bonds are your weakness, you definitely need my fantasy romance books with fated mates list

Watch Me β€” Tahereh Mafi

Rosabelle is charged with infiltrating the enemy base and bringing it down from the inside. Which she’s more than capable of accomplishing.

The only problem? James.

The equally capable soldier who infiltrates her base first.

Best for readers who want: dystopian fantasy, deadly powers, found family, slow-burn romance, dangerous FMCs AND MMCs.

When the Moon Hatched β€” Sarah A. Parker

Raeve is an assassin for a rebellion.

Her job is simple: complete the order, don’t get caught, and keep moving.

Then everything goes spectacularly wrong.

Raeve is exactly the kind of FMC you want when you say you want a badass heroine. She’s deadly, independent, angry, and absolutely not interested in being someone’s damsel.

Best for readers who want: assassin FMCs, rebellion, fae, elemental magic, mysterious worlds, dangerous enemies, and a heroine who can handle herself.

The Ever King β€” L.J. Andrews

Fae pirates? Enemies-to-lovers? A touch-her-and-die MMC?

Yep.

The Ever King brings pirate adventure into the romantasy world, and the FMC is more than capable of holding her own in the middle of all that chaos.

Best for readers who want: badass FMCs, fae pirates, sea-faring adventure, enemies-to-lovers, magical bonds, disability representation, and touch-her-and-die energy.

The Second Death of Locke β€” V.L. Bovalino

Locke is a knight hiding more than she lets on as she fights to protect her mage.

This standalone fantasy romance brings together a hidden identity, a unique magic system, magical bonds, and a chosen-one storyline, all wrapped around a romance that had me staying up way too late.

The Book of Azrael β€” Amber V. Nicole

Dianna is not your sweet, morally upright heroine.

She’s a villainous shapeshifter who has spent centuries doing whatever it takes to protect the people she loves. When an ancient threat resurfaces, she finds herself forced into an uneasy alliance with a powerful god king.

Best for readers who want: morally grey FMCs, villain heroines, shapeshifters, powerful magic, gods, enemies-to-lovers, and a heroine who absolutely does not need saving.

Daughter of No Worlds β€” Carissa Broadbent

Tisaanah has survived slavery, violence, and years of being treated like she isn’t even a person.

So when she finally gets a chance at freedom, she isn’t about to waste it.

Armed with a little magic, a lot of determination, and an absolutely brutal amount of perseverance, Tisaanah sets out to save the person she left behind and build a life of her own.

She isn’t powerful because she was handed everything.

She’s powerful because she survived.

And then she learns exactly what she’s capable of.

Best for readers who want: powerful heroines, dark magic, former slaves fighting for freedom, found family, deadly games, slow-burn romance, and an FMC who refuses to stay broken.

And if dangerous, morally grey shadow men are your other weakness, obviously you need my shadow daddy fantasy romance books list

Empire of Flame and Thorns β€” Marion Blackwood

Selena is a fae rebel trapped in the Seelie Court and living under the control of dragon shifters.

Her way out? Enter the Atonement Trials.

Only three people can win, and Selena fully intends to be one of them. Unfortunately, the ruthless commander of the dragon shifter army is determined to make sure she doesn’t.

Immortal Fury β€” Eliza Raine

If your preferred flavor of badass FMC is β€œthrow her into a deadly competition and see what happens,” Immortal Fury has you covered.

βš”οΈ She Has Been Through Enough. Now She’s Dangerous.

Shatter Me β€” Tahereh Mafi

Locked away because of her lethal ability, Juliette is eventually pulled into a conflict where the people in power realize her abilities might make her more valuable as a weapon than a prisoner.

And watching her figure out exactly what she’s capable of is a huge part of the fun.

Also, James Anderson’s chaotic charm and Warner being… well, Warner.

Best for readers who want: deadly powers, dystopian worlds, assassins, espionage, mind games, slow-burn romance, and an FMC learning just how dangerous she can be.

πŸ‘‰ Get it here | Love a good slow burn romance? Here’s a list of super slow burn fantasy romance book recs

Because I Killed Him β€” Edith Birde

This one takes the badass FMC concept and drops it into a dystopian surveillance state where even the smallest mistake can have serious consequences.

The world blends futuristic technology with old-world etiquette, academia, fencing, surveillance, and a rigid class system.

And our heroine has to navigate all of it while figuring out who she can trust.

Best for readers who want: dystopian fantasy, surveillance states, fencing, academia, found family, slow-burn romance, and high-stakes survival.

We Who Will Die β€” Stacia Stark

Deadly trials. Vampires. A murder mystery. A unique magic system.

And an FMC who has to survive the whole mess.

Basically, if you enjoy your fantasy romance with a side of β€œsomeone might actually die here,” this one’s for you.

Best for readers who want: deadly trials, vampires, murder mysteries, magical creatures, unique magic systems, friends-to-lovers, and high-stakes fantasy.

Souls in Ruin β€” Jacqueline White

Okay.

This one comes with a warning.

Souls in Ruin is dark fantasy romance.

We’re talking captivity, torture, blood and gore, revenge, and magical bonds. This is not the book you pick up when you’re looking for a cozy little fantasy adventure and some cute flirting.

The FMC is navigating an absolutely brutal situation, and the story does not soften the edges for you.

I loved the lyrical writing, but this is one where you absolutely need to check the content warnings before diving in. If you can handle it, it’s worth bearing witness to the FMC’s strength.

Best for readers who want: truly dark fantasy romance, revenge, captivity, magical bonds, morally complicated characters, blood and gore, and an FMC who survives hell.

Eyes of Devious Burgundy β€” Lacey Lehotzky

Secret identities are one of my favorite ways to make an FMC dangerous.

Because there’s nothing quite like watching someone walk around while everyone else thinks they know exactly who she is…

when they absolutely do not.

Best for readers who want: secret identities, badass FMCs, angels and demons, military fantasy, magical bonds, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers, and dark fantasy.
